LET´S START WITH A BIT OF HISTORY

Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research. The model of Pelotonia remains simple: Pelotonia’s operating expenses are covered by generous funding partners so that 100% of every dollar raised by Pelotonia Riders, Virtual Riders and Volunteers goes directly to fund cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Pelotonia is a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment and volunteerism. In its first six rides, Pelotonia raised more than $82 million for cancer research. Thanks to its generous funding partners, Pelotonia is able to direct 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute

THE JAMES CANCER HOSPITAL AND THE SOLOVE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is the patient-care component of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. The James is a transformational facility that fosters the collaboration and integration of cancer research and clinical cancer care. The James is the largest cancer hospital in the Midwest and the third largest in the nation.

THE RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER OF RIDERS IN 2014

August 6, 2014 – Pelotonia, the grassroots fundraiser with One Goal End Cancer, is projecting more than 7,000 riders and 2,500 volunteers this year, surpassing the 6,723 riders and 2,300 volunteers who participated in 2013.

Traveling from 41 states and five different countries, the record-breaking number of riders is expected to raise more than $19 million, which would bring the overall fundraising total to more than $86 million
Based on ridership, Pelotonia is the largest single-event cycling fundraiser benefitting cancer research in the United States. Riders make a commitment to raise a minimum of $1,200 to $2,200 for cancer research based on their route choice.

Pelotonia donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center
Along the 180-mile route, more than 2,500 volunteers will support riders by providing snacks, beverages, first aid assistance and bike maintenance services alongside thousands of supporters cheering riders throughout their ride.

IDEA GRANTS

It is unlikely that a cure for cancer will come from one scientist. Instead, it will be through team science that we will get new answers and treatments. With this in mind, the Pelotonia Research Award Program provided two-year “idea” grants that enable creative teams of scientists at Ohio State to embark on research that could lead to discoveries resulting in better treatments and prevention strategies.

THE PELOTONIA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Pelotonia Fellowship Program trains promising and accomplished undergraduate, graduate, medical and postdoctoral students from any discipline at Ohio State who have the potential to become independent cancer researchers.

The Fellowship Program started in 2010 and to date has awarded 292 student fellowships through an annual allocation of 2 million in Pelotonia revenue for this program. Scholarship recipients so far include:

  • 129 undergraduates
  • 77 graduates
  • 4 medical students
  • 61 postdoctoral fellows
  • 21 international scholars

Programs include a fellowship program, funding student researchers; idea grants, funding teams of faculty researchers; new laboratory instrumentation; and recruitment and retention of some of the world’s best cancer researchers and programs.

VS ANGELS SWEAT IT OUT

Victoria’s Secret Angels Elsa Hosk, Jac Jagaciak, Jasmine Tookes, Lais Ribeiro, Martha Hunt, and Romee Strijd hosted the annual Supermodel Cycle to benefit Pelotonia – an annual grassroots bike tour that raises funds for cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Each year, more than 6,000 cyclists descend upon Columbus, Ohio to ride for cancer research—a mix of cancer survivors, experienced cyclists, and many riding in honor of loved ones.

The Supermodel Cycle ride to support Pelotonia took place at SoulCycle’s West Village location. 100% of the proceeds were donated directly to Pelotonia to support Ohio State’s world renowned Cancer Research.
